Mugdar Progressive Overload: 4 Ways to Make Your Workout Harder

 

If you have been doing Mugdar training for some time, you may eventually notice that the same workout no longer feels as challenging as it did when you started.

You may be able to perform the same number of swings more comfortably.

The same Mugdar weight may feel easier to control.

You may recover more quickly between sets.

This is where the concept of progressive overload becomes useful.

Progressive overload means gradually increasing the training challenge over time so that your body continues to adapt.

With Mugdar training, that does not necessarily mean simply buying a heavier Mugdar.

You can progress by changing different aspects of your training, but the most important variables should be chosen according to your goal.

Myself Mohnish Sharma, Founder of Mugdar House, use different progression methods in my own Mugdar training, including increasing repetitions, working with different Mugdar weights and adjusting rest periods according to the workout.

The key is not to make every workout harder at any cost.

The goal is to gradually increase the training challenge while maintaining good technique and recovering adequately.


What Is Progressive Overload?

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of training demand over time.

If you repeatedly perform the exact same workload indefinitely, your body may eventually become more accustomed to it.

For example, imagine that you always perform:

5 kg Mugdar → 30 reps → 60 seconds rest

If that workload becomes consistently manageable, you have several options.

You might:

  • Increase repetitions.
  • Increase resistance.
  • Increase the number of sets.
  • Adjust rest periods.
  • Modify the exercise or movement.
  • Progress the overall training volume.

The important point is that progressive overload is broader than simply increasing weight.

Current resistance-training evidence also supports a goal-specific approach: heavier loads are particularly useful for maximizing strength, while muscle growth can occur across a broader range of resistance loads when the overall training stimulus is appropriate.


1. Increase the Mugdar Weight

Increasing resistance is one of the clearest ways to progressively overload a resistance-training exercise.

For example:

3 kg → 5 kg → 6 kg → 8 kg

This does not mean that you should automatically follow this exact sequence.

The appropriate progression depends on your current ability.

If your current Mugdar has become consistently manageable and you can maintain good technique, moving to a heavier Mugdar can provide a greater external resistance challenge.

But remember:

A heavier Mugdar is not automatically a better Mugdar.

The weight needs to be appropriate for the movement you are performing and your current ability to control it.


When Should You Increase Mugdar Weight?

There is no universal rule such as:

“After four workouts, increase the weight.”

Instead, look at your performance.

Before increasing resistance, you should be able to perform your current workload with:

  • Consistent technique
  • Good control
  • A secure grip
  • Appropriate range of motion
  • Manageable fatigue
  • No unnecessary compensatory movement

Then you can consider increasing the challenge.

The increase does not need to be dramatic.

A relatively small increase in resistance can be enough to make the exercise more challenging.


Don't Increase Weight Just to Show Strength

One common mistake in resistance training is treating the weight number as the main measurement of progress.

With a Mugdar, this can be particularly important because the implement is moving through space.

If the weight is beyond your current ability, you may start relying on excessive momentum or lose control of the movement.

That isn't necessarily productive progression.

A better sequence is:

Control → Consistency → Adaptation → Increased Challenge

rather than:

Heavy Weight → Poor Technique → More Momentum


2. Increase Your Mugdar Repetitions

Increasing repetitions is another way to increase the total amount of work you perform.

For example:

50 swings → 75 → 100 → 150 → 200

This is only an example.

You don't need to follow these exact numbers.

As your capacity improves, gradually increasing repetitions can increase the volume of a workout.

In my own training, I have used high-repetition Mugdar sessions and set a personal target of 500 swings. After returning from a long break, reaching approximately 250 swings became an important personal milestone for me.

That is a useful example of increasing training volume.

But:

250 or 500 swings are not scientifically established milestones.

They are personal or illustrative training targets.


Does Increasing Repetitions Automatically Build More Muscle?

No.

Increasing repetitions increases the number of repetitions you perform, but more repetitions do not automatically mean more muscle growth.

Muscle hypertrophy can occur across a relatively broad range of resistance-training loads when the overall training stimulus is sufficient. Heavier loads have a clearer advantage when the specific goal is maximizing strength.

So don't think:

More reps = more muscle

or:

Heavy weight = automatically more muscle.

Instead, think about the entire training program:

Resistance + volume + effort + progression + recovery


High Repetitions and Heavier Resistance Can Serve Different Goals

Different training approaches can emphasize different qualities.

Higher Repetitions With Manageable Resistance

Can be useful when the goal includes:

  • Higher training volume
  • Muscular endurance
  • Conditioning
  • Grip endurance
  • Longer sets

Heavier Resistance

Can be useful when the goal includes:

  • Greater external resistance
  • Strength development
  • Lower-repetition work
  • Progressive loading

In my own training approach, I use different Mugdar workloads depending on what I want to train rather than assuming one repetition range is ideal for everyone.


3. Change the Movement Speed

The original version of this article described changing movement speed as one of the four main progressive-overload methods.

This needs a more careful scientific explanation.

Changing movement tempo can change the difficulty and characteristics of an exercise.

For example, deliberately performing a movement in a controlled manner can increase the amount of time you spend controlling the implement.

However:

Slower is not automatically better for muscle growth or strength.

Research examining repetition duration has found that muscle hypertrophy can occur across a relatively broad range of repetition durations, rather than showing a simple “slower is better” relationship. Very slow repetitions may actually be less effective for hypertrophy when performed at extremely slow tempos.

Therefore, tempo should be considered a training variable, not a magic progressive-overload method.


Does Faster Mugdar Training Mean More Progress?

Not automatically.

In my own training, I have experimented with increasing the pace, but I emphasize that pace should never compromise technique.

If increasing speed causes:

  • Grip instability
  • Loss of control
  • Excessive momentum
  • Poor posture
  • An altered movement path

then simply moving faster isn't necessarily productive.

Speed should support the exercise—not replace technique.


Can Slower Mugdar Training Be Useful?

Yes.

A controlled tempo can make you pay closer attention to:

  • Movement path
  • Hand position
  • Grip
  • Shoulder control
  • Transitions
  • Overall movement quality

It can also make a familiar movement feel different.

But we should not claim:

“Slow Mugdar reps build more muscle.”

The evidence does not support such a universal statement. A range of repetition durations can produce hypertrophy, provided the broader training stimulus is appropriate.


4. Adjust Your Rest Periods

Rest periods are another training variable that can be manipulated.

For example:

30 swings → 60 seconds rest → 30 swings

could become:

30 swings → 45 seconds rest → 30 swings

and later:

30 swings → 30 seconds rest → 30 swings

The total repetitions may remain the same, but the session is completed with less recovery between sets.

In my own training, I have experimented with reducing rest as the workout progressed.

This can increase training density and make the session feel more demanding.


Is Less Rest Always Better?

No.

This is another place where the original article needed a scientific qualification.

Reducing rest can increase fatigue and training density, but it does not automatically produce better strength or muscle-growth results.

Research indicates that both shorter and longer rest intervals can be useful for hypertrophy, while longer rest periods can be advantageous for maintaining performance and maximizing strength in some populations.

So rest should be selected according to the goal.

If you're doing high-volume conditioning work:

Shorter rest may be appropriate if you can maintain technique.

If you're training for strength:

You may benefit from longer recovery so you can produce high-quality repetitions.

If you're performing a demanding Mugdar movement:

Enough recovery may be necessary to maintain control.


Don't Reduce Rest So Much That Technique Breaks Down

If reducing rest causes you to lose control of the Mugdar, the rest period may have become too short for that particular workout.

The goal is not:

“How little rest can I survive?”

The goal is:

“How can I create an appropriate training challenge while maintaining quality?”

In my own approach, I adjust rest according to my capacity.


A Practical Example of Mugdar Progression

Imagine you currently train with:

5 kg Mugdar

30 swings per set

60 seconds rest

You could structure progression like this:

Stage 1

5 kg
30 reps
60 sec rest

Stage 2

5 kg
35 reps
60 sec rest

Stage 3

5 kg
35 reps
45 sec rest

Stage 4

5 kg
40 reps
45 sec rest

Stage 5

Move to a heavier Mugdar when appropriate.

This is an illustrative example, not a universal Mugdar program.

And there is no need to progress every variable at once.


Can You Use More Than One Progression Method?

Yes.

You can manipulate different variables over time.

For example:

Increase repetitions

Maintain that workload until it becomes manageable

Increase resistance

Or:

Maintain resistance

Increase repetitions

Adjust rest if appropriate

The best sequence depends on your goal.

The important thing is to avoid making large changes to several variables simultaneously.


Don't Increase Weight, Reps and Rest Changes All at Once

Imagine going from:

5 kg + 100 reps + 60 sec rest

to:

8 kg + 200 reps + 20 sec rest

That would represent a very large increase in training demand.

Instead, change one major variable at a time.

For example:

Same weight → more reps

then:

Same weight → slightly different rest

then:

Heavier weight

This makes your progression easier to monitor and generally more manageable.


Progressive Overload for Mugdar Endurance

If endurance is your main goal, gradually increasing repetitions or total training volume can be one way to progress.

In my experience, manageable resistance combined with higher repetitions has been useful for endurance-oriented Mugdar training.

As volume increases, grip and forearm fatigue can become important limiting factors.

During my own high-volume training, I experienced increasing fatigue in my hands and forearms as the repetitions accumulated.

But again:

There is no universal number of repetitions that defines Mugdar endurance.

Your workload should progress according to your own capacity.


Progressive Overload for Strength

If strength is your goal, increasing resistance becomes particularly relevant.

A heavier Mugdar provides a greater external load.

However, the weight still needs to be appropriate for your ability to control the movement.

The question isn't:

“How heavy can I swing?”

It is:

“How much resistance can I control correctly?”

Current evidence supports heavier loads as particularly effective for improving maximal strength.


Progressive Overload for Muscle Gain

If muscle development is your goal, Mugdar training can form part of a broader resistance-training program.

But one Mugdar movement should not be expected to optimally develop every muscle.

For example:

Want more biceps development?

Add dedicated biceps training.

Want more chest development?

Add exercises such as push-ups or other appropriate resistance exercises.

Mugdar can be an important part of the program, but it does not have to do everything.

For hypertrophy, the overall resistance-training stimulus and sufficient training volume matter more than simply selecting the heaviest Mugdar available.


Can You Combine Light and Heavy Mugdars?

Yes.

One approach I use is combining different Mugdar workloads.

For example:

Light/moderate Mugdar → higher repetitions

followed by:

Heavier Mugdar → lower repetitions

This can allow you to work with different resistance levels within a broader training plan.

But the exact number of repetitions and weight should be individualized.


Why 250 Swings Became Important in My Training

After returning from a long break, I wasn't initially sure whether I would reach my personal target of 500 swings.

As the workout progressed, approximately 250 swings became an important psychological milestone for me.

After reaching that point, I felt that progressing toward 350 was realistic.

This illustrates an important principle:

Progress doesn't always mean adding weight.

Sometimes progress means:

“I couldn't comfortably handle this workload before. Now I can.”

If you want to apply progressive overload systematically, track your workouts.

You don't need an expensive app.

A simple notebook can be enough.

The purpose is simple:

Know where you started so you know whether you've progressed.


How Do You Know If Your Mugdar Training Is Progressing?

Progress does not have to mean using a heavier Mugdar.

You may be progressing if:

  • You can perform more repetitions with the same weight.
  • You can perform the same workload with better technique.
  • You can maintain control more consistently.
  • You can handle more total training volume.
  • Your grip endurance improves.
  • Your endurance improves.
  • A previously difficult workload becomes manageable.

However, one point needs clarification:

Needing less rest is not automatically evidence of better strength or hypertrophy.

It can indicate that the workout has become easier or that your work capacity has improved, but it should be interpreted according to the goal of the program.

This is why progressive overload is better understood as:

Progressive training challenge

rather than simply:

Progressively heavier weight.


The Most Important Rule: Technique Comes First

This is particularly important with Mugdar training.

During my training, I emphasize keeping the movement controlled and maintaining a secure grip, especially when controlling the Mugdar as it moves backward.

So if increasing a particular variable causes your technique to break down:

Stop progressing that variable.

Return to a manageable workload.

Then build again.

Progressive overload is only useful when the exercise remains technically sound enough to train the intended movement.


Progressive Overload Does Not Mean Training to Failure Every Time

You don't need to completely exhaust yourself in every workout.

Resistance-training research does not support the idea that every set must reach momentary muscular failure for strength or hypertrophy.

If every workout becomes a test of your maximum capacity, fatigue can accumulate and technique may become harder to maintain.

Progressive overload is about gradual adaptation, not maximum exhaustion.

Sometimes your progression may simply be:

Same weight + better technique

Other times:

Same weight + more reps

Or:

More resistance + fewer reps

There is no requirement for every workout to be harder than the previous one.

1. Increasing Weight Too Quickly

Jumping to a much heavier Mugdar before developing adequate control can make the exercise unnecessarily difficult.

3. Reducing Rest Too Aggressively

Shorter rest can increase fatigue and training density, but it can also reduce the amount of high-quality work you can perform.

4. Changing Everything at Once

Changing weight, repetitions and rest simultaneously can create a very large increase in training demand.

5. Sacrificing Technique

A larger number or heavier weight is not worth losing control of the movement.

6. Comparing Your Numbers With Someone Else

Your training capacity is individual.

Your progression should be based on your own starting point and response to training.


How Often Should You Apply Progressive Overload?

You don't have to increase something every workout.

Your body needs time to adapt to a new workload.

For example, you may keep the same training load for several sessions until it becomes manageable.

Then you can change one variable.

A useful principle is:

Train → Adapt → Progress → Adapt → Progress

rather than:

Train → Increase everything → Exhaust yourself

This allows progression to become a long-term process rather than a constant attempt to make every session harder.


What Is the Best Progressive-Overload Method for Mugdar?

There isn't one universal best method.

It depends on the goal.

For Strength

Progressively increasing resistance is particularly relevant.

For Hypertrophy
