Mugdar weight for beginners |SHWF Formula | Mugdar House

Choosing the right Mugdar is not only about weight — it also depends on shape, handle type, and finish. This guide helps beginners start safely and understand how to upgrade correctly.

Men → Beginners / Using for the First Time

When starting Mugdar training, follow this order:

Shape → Handle → Weight → Finish (Polish Type) i.e. (SHWF)

(A) Shape of Mugdar

Always choose a Traditional Shape Mugdar.

Why Traditional Shape?

  • Perfect balance
  • Smooth natural swing
  • Less wrist strain
  • Helps learn technique correctly
  • Best for shoulder and stabilizer strength

(B) Handle Type

Beginners should always start with a Large Handle.

Benefits:

  • Strong wrist stability
  • Tight, secure grip
  • Better control in long swings
  • Reduced slipping risk

(C) Weight Selection

Age 13–18

  • Weight: 3 kg (single or pair)
  • Shape: Traditional
  • Handle: Large Handle

Age 19–35

  • Weight: 5 kg (single or pair)
  • Shape: Traditional
  • Handle: Large Handle

Age 35+

  • Weight: 3 kg (single or pair)
  • Shape: Traditional
  • Handle: Large Handle

(D) Polished, Non-Polished, or Partial-Polished Mugdar ?

This depends on how much time you have for maintenance.

Non-Polished Mugdar

Best if you can take care of your Mugdar regularly.

Needs oiling at regular intervals depending on climate changes, usage e.t.c.

Full Polished Mugdar

Best for people who want zero maintenance.

  • No need to oil
  • Ready to use
  • Low maintenance

Problem:
Handle becomes slippery during swings.

Partial Polished Mugdar (Best Practical Option)

Perfect balance of grip + low maintenance.

  • Body polished → looks premium
  • Handle non-polished → strong, non-slip grip
  • Safe for beginners
  • Better than full polish for swing control

Women → Beginners / Using for the First Time

When starting Mugdar training, follow this same order:

Shape → Handle → Weight → Finish (Polish Type) i.e. (SHWF)

The only difference is Weight Selection.

For women, the safest and most effective starting point is:

No matter what your age is, always start with a single or pair of 3 kg Mugdar with a Large Handle.

This helps build proper form, wrist stability, and swing control before moving to higher weights.

Avoid Misleading Calculations About Weight Selection

Recently we saw a post stating that “To calculate the right weight of mugdar for a
practitioner to start with can be find out with a basic equation - your weight divided by 8,
and then divided further by 2. If you weigh 65 Kg, then as per the equation is - 65/8 =
8.125/2 = 4.06 Kg.
Means, a person weighing 65 Kgs should go for a 4 Kg Mugdar. Now, this equation is totally wrong and makes no sense, let’s see how; For Example – a person weighs 80Kg, then according to above equation, he/she should start with 5Kg, no
matter whatever is the age or gender.
Let’s talk about a person having an age of 60 years and weighs 80Kgs. Can he really able to start mugdar with 5kg? The practical answer is NO, because he/she may not have that
strength to endure such a heavy weight. Natural muscle strength of a person having 60 years age cannot be as equal as of 30 years, so how can both start with same mugdar weight? In conclusion, the above equation is incomplete and can never provide any right weight selection guidance. So, both factors; age and gender of a person plays a major role in the selection of correct weight of mugdar, body weight has no meaning into it.

Important Note: Body-Weight formulas don’t work - only age and gender decide your correct Mugdar weight.

By following the SHWF Formula (Shape → Handle → Weight → Finish), you can now make an informed and safe Mugdar selection. We hope this article has been valuable in guiding your first step.
